Black Bear Food
Black Bear Food – Vegetation
In the woods there is a lot of vegetation perfect for the black bear to eat. In the spring almost every single sprouting bud in the wood is a tasteful snack for a black bear. Otherwise a wide variety of fruits, berries, nuts and acorns are the preferred choice of black bear food since these generally come in a large amount in any common forest. The best vegetation snack is to be found close to marshland though where almost all greens are juicy and tender.
Black Bear Food – Animals
Although black bears do not generally hunt for prey they tend to eat meat whenever the opportunity arrives. Relatively fresh carcasses are feasted upon if no other seemingly interested predator is nearby and if the black bear happens to kill something while defending itself or its cubs it is instantly turned into food. The black bear will also fish in streams by trying to either grab hold of the fish or simply throwing it up to land. Different insects are also a treat for the black bear but not very common since they are pretty hard to catch.
Black Bear Food – What else is there?
Now it might seem that there is nothing else for the black bear to eat but that is just not true, there is a lot more. Not only black bears but almost all bears are known to perform raids against honey producing bees in an effort to get a huge chunk out of their honey and beeswax. Bears are also highly opportunistic and will visit both camping sites and dump sites close to their natural habitat. Trash cans usually contains lots of goodies for the black bear and are often raided, sometimes every night, in the chase for something extra tasty. Feeding a bear is generally a bad idea since most black bears gets highly frustrated when it turns out that the food is gone, such situations can end really bad. |
